The National Library of Australia Scholarships program (formerly known as the Summer Scholarships) provides six-week residences for PhD students who require access to the Library’s collections to assist their postgraduate research.

What Scholarships are offered in 2025?

These scholarships are made possible through the generosity of many National Library patrons and donors.  Nine scholarships are available in 2025:

For research on any subject:

• The Professor Robert and Josephine Shanks Scholarship
• The Morag Fraser Scholarship
• The Carol Moya Mills Scholarship - for a scholar from regional or rural Australia

For First Nations scholars:

• The National Library of Australia First Nations Scholarship, supported by Irene Kaspar and Peter Boege – for Australian First Nations scholars only, for research on any subject

For specialist research topics:

• The National Library of Australia Scholarship  in Asian Studies, supported in memory of Cheng King Law – for research in Asian Studies
• The Seymour Scholarship, supported by Dr John and Mrs Heather Seymour AO - for biographical research

Australian Collaborative Education Network (ACEN) has partnered with to offer 7 Global Online Internships which enable students from ACEN Member Institutions and equity groups to access a diverse range of work-integrated learning (WIL) experiences. The AgriFutures Horizon Scholarship is awarded to students studying an agriculture-related undergraduate degree or a Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths/Finance (STEM) degree with relevant majors which align to agriculture.

In partnership with industry sponsors, the AgriFutures Horizon Scholarship is an initiative supporting students enrolled in full time study at an Australian university by providing:

• A bursary of $5000 per year for the final two years of your degree

Who can apply

To be eligible for the Horizon Scholarship, students must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident enrolled full-time in their last two years of an agriculture-related undergraduate degree at an Australian university with a maximum two-year gap between high school and tertiary study.

Our research shows that Horizon Scholars are typically two to three years ahead of other university graduates in terms of their career readiness and industry networks.

Previously, the Horizon Scholarship program was eligible to students that were in their first two years of tertiary studies. Now, the Horizon Scholarship is offered to students in their last years of study, to best connect students with industry networks and giving them this continued advantage when entering the workforce.

Suitable degrees include, but are not limited to:

• Agricultural Science
• Rural Science
• Livestock/Animal Science
• Veterinary Science
• Agribusiness
• Plant Science
• Agricultural Economics
• Resource Management
• Sustainability
• Food Security
• Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths (STEM) with major studies and subject selections relevant to, and aligned with, agriculture

Scholarship recipients will be selected on the basis of their commitment to a career in agriculture, as well as their leadership potential and tertiary academic record to date.

Recipients will be required to attend the workshop (held in July 2022), and complete two weeks of work placement each year of the scholarship. Reasonable costs associated with these activities are covered by the program.

Applications for the 2023 AgriFutures Horizon Scholarship open on Monday, 14 November 2022.

The Astor Legal Criminal Lawyers Scholarship was established in 2021 to encourage and support Australian law students who are passionate about pursuing a career in the criminal law, but may be suffering from financial hardship and/or come from a regional or remote area.

Eligibility

Applicants must have Australian citizenship or Australian permanent residency and enrolled in an LL.B, Juris Doctor or Legal Practitioners Admission Board course, or undertaking a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice. Current or former Astor Legal employees are not eligible.

Selection Criteria

The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of their resume, covering letter, an academic transcript, evidence of any financial hardship, evidence of being from a remote or regional location and possibly an interview with the firm’s principal. A Practical Legal Training placement with Astor Legal may be offered to the successful nominee.

The Scholarship is valued at $2,000 as a one-off payment which is payable upon the selection of the successful nominee.

The Australian Sugar Industry Scholarship is awarded to undergraduates (in their penultimate year of study) studying engineering (chemical, mechanical, process and electrical), science or technical disciplines at an Australian university or tertiary institution. The Australian Sugar Industry Scholarship aims to encourage the participation of high calibre students in the Australian sugar processing industry.

The Australian sugar industry will fund scholarship recipients each year to be hosted by Australian sugar mills and refineries for up to three work placements of four weeks each over one and half years (two placements during the crushing season and one placement during maintenance season).

The scholarship is a jointly funded by Australia’s sugar mills, through Sugar Research Institute (SRI) and Sugar Research Australia (SRA).

In addition to financial and work placement support, the Australian Sugar Industry Scholarship program helps recipients to make the most of their university experience through extra development opportunities by building their leadership skills and professional networks.

Eligibility details:

You must be:

• A penultimate year student currently undertaking an engineering, science or technical degree at an Australian university or tertiary institution
• Able to undertake up to three periods of work placement over an 18 month period (12 weeks in total) during semester breaks at an Australian sugar mill location selected by SRI.
• Prior to the commencement of each work placement, the scholarship recipient must successfully complete all medical tests including alcohol and drug testing required by a sugar industry company.

APRA and the Reserve Bank of Australia have established the Brian Gray Scholarship program in memory of Brian Gray, who died on 24 August 2001 while serving as Executive General manager of APRA's Policy, Research and Consulting Division.

The City of Logan Tertiary Education Bursary offers financial support for university students in Logan City. We work with several organisations in south east Queensland to provide financial support to young people in Logan wishing to undertake tertiary studies.

The Clare Burton Memorial Scholarship was established to honour and continue the work of Dr Clare Burton, a leading researcher, public sector administrator, academic, consultant and writer on employment equity. The gift aims to helps students complete research in women and equality in all spheres of endeavour including (but not limited to) employment, education, health, communications, engineering, and science.
 
The student will receive a $10,000 one-off payment as a research allowance.
 
If you are a current research student at Australian university, enrolled either full- or part-time in a research degree, pursuing research where the major piece of work is focussed on gender equity, and you have completed at least the first milestone of your research degree you may be eligible to apply.

The Australian Government is providing financial support for initial teacher education (ITE) students commencing full-time teaching degrees from 2024. The Commonwealth Teaching Scholarships Program offers scholarships of $40,000 per student for full-time undergraduate ITE students ($10,000 per year for a four-year qualification) and $20,000 per student for full-time postgraduate ITE students ($10,000 per year for a two-year qualification). 

In exchange for financial support, successful applicants will be required to teach in government schools or government-run early learning settings after graduating, for a time equivalent to the length of their ITE program. Up to 1,000 scholarships are available every year for the next five years and priority will be given to new ITE students who identify as belonging to one or more of the following target cohorts:

• High-achieving students (with an ATAR of 80 or more or equivalent academic result)
• First Nations peoples
• People for whom English is an additional language/dialect

The Australian Wildlife Society has Introduced a new scholarship in Honour of Dr Clive Williams OAM. 

The Dr Clive Williams OAM Memorial Wildlife Conservation Scholarship is offered to Australian university honours or postgraduate students. Each year, one $5,000 scholarship will be awarded.

The scholarship is available for research projects directly relevant to protecting Australia’s wildlife – flora and fauna. Scholarships may be used to purchase equipment and consumables, travel expenses related to field research, or attend a conference where the student’s research will be presented. The scholarship is paid directly to the student.

Each year the Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) offers a limited number of long-term placement opportunities of six or 12 months in length.

The Industry Experience Placement (IEP) program is a paid program for high-performing Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) students who are required to complete an industry placement as part of their university course. IEP students are partnered with Defence/DSTG research staff and use skills gained at university to work on a current Defence project. This year there are up to 40 potential projects covering our eight research streams.

Placements are commencing on Monday, 4 March 2023 and will be either 6 or 12-month duration dependent on student requirements.

Eligibility requirements

The student must:

• be an Australian citizen;
• be enrolled at a tertiary institution in an undergraduate degree;
• have the option to undertake a practical placement as part of their Degree; and
• successfully undergo a Defence security clearance.

Projects are available in Melbourne, Adelaide and Brisbane. Please note that relocation support is not available with travel and accommodation costs to be taken into consideration by the applicant.

Each year the Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) offers a limited number of scholarships over the University summer vacation period.

The Summer Vacation Placement (SVP) program is a 12-week paid program for high-performing undergraduate Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) students. SVP students are partnered with DSTG research staff and use skills gained at university to work on a current Defence project. This year there are up to 30 projects covering our eight research streams.

The program commences on Monday, 27 November 2023 and will finish on Friday, 16 February 2024.

Eligibility requirements

The student must:

• be an Australian citizen;
• be enrolled at a tertiary institution and be continuing tertiary studies in the forthcoming year;
• have completed 2 years of tertiary study before commencing the project;
• successfully undergo a Defence security clearance.

Projects are available in Canberra, Melbourne, Adelaide and Brisbane. Please note that relocation support is not available with travel and accommodation costs to be taken into consideration by the applicant.

The program will award up to 500 undergraduate and postgraduate scholarships over six years to women in STEM. The Elevate Program aims to address gender inequities in STEM through fostering more women-led industry-academia collaborations in applied research and business, growing professional skills of women in STEM and propelling women into leadership.

Successful recipients will receive the following support and opportunities:

The Gowrie Bursary derives from a fund that was set up in 1943 to maintain research scholarships in perpetual memory of those Australian men and women who gave their lives for their country in the Second World War.

The bursary is targeted at those who are serving or have served in the Australian Armed Forces and their lineal descendants, particularly those for whom its relatively small monetary value will make a real difference.

The Equity Rural Placement Scholarship Program is an initiative of the National Association of Field Experience Administrators Inc (NAFEA) intended to assist WIL / field experience administrators by providing financial assistance to students, who have been assessed as experiencing financial hardship, to undertake placements in rural settings and nominated key priority areas.  

Approved applications will be awarded scholarships up to $1500.

The Neville Bonner Memorial Scholarship is a prestigious national scholarship for Indigenous students to study honours in political science at any Australian university.

Neville Bonner's life is a study not only of courage, conscience and compassion in the face of extraordinary adversity, but also of personal and national reconciliation.

Established in the year 2000 by the Federal Government, the Neville Bonner Memorial Scholarship is Australia's most prestigious scholarship for Indigenous Australians to study Honours in Political Science (or related subjects) at any recognised Australian university. One Neville Bonner Scholarship may be awarded each year.

Political Science may be broadly interpreted to include such subjects as government, political geography, political history, political anthropology and political economics. The Selection Committee may also consider application from other subject areas (consistent with the broad aim of the Scholarship) where there is a political component to the proposed thesis.

The New Columbo Plan (NCP) Scholarship Program is an Australian Government initiative. The Program offers scholarships annually to a diverse cohort of Australian undergraduates studying a variety of disciplines in up to 40 Indo-Pacific locations. The New Colombo Plan Scholarship consists of:

The National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) is offering two scholarships in 2023.

• The for post-graduate feminist studies by Research is available for any student undertaking postgraduate feminist studies in any discipline, awarding $5000 per year for a maximum of 3 years to the successful applicant. This scholarship has been created in recognition of Dr Carolyn Allport’s contribution to the leadership and development of the Union in her 16 years as National President.

The Puggy Hunter Memorial Scholarship Scheme (PHMSS) is designed to encourage and assist undergraduate students in health-related disciplines to complete their studies and join the health workforce. These are competitive scholarships and will be awarded on the recommendation of the independent selection committee whose assessment will be based on how applicants address the following questions:

• Describe what has been your driving influence/motivation in wanting to become a health professional in your chosen area.
• Discuss what you hope to accomplish as a health professional in the next 5-10 years.
• Discuss your commitment to study in your chosen course.

The scholarships are funded by the Australian Government, Department of Health and Aged Care and administered by the Australian College of Nursing. Students in regional areas often have to relocate in order to study, leaving behind the support of family and friends and feeling torn between their education and their obligations. Fortunately, assistance in the form of a scholarship can help ease some worries and allow greater freedom to more regularly visit home and lend a hand.

This is more important than ever, with many RASF Rural Scholarship recipients coming from drought-stricken towns and farms that need all hands helping whenever possible. Many applicants mention the financial burden of needing to return home to help in holidays and the resulting lost opportunity to work.

Our Rural Scholarship program goes a small way to ensure students from regional areas can chase the same education dreams as students from metropolitan areas.

Who can apply for a RAS Foundation Rural Scholarship?
Rural Scholarships are available to support individuals in NSW who demonstrate a passion for rural communities and commitment for any career that will ensure the future success of rural and regional NSW.

Applicants for a Rural Scholarship must:

• Be enrolled in or applying for study in any accredited tertiary course at an approved Australian education provider
• Demonstrate a desire to contribute to the future of rural NSW
• Demonstrate how a scholarship would assist them in achieving their education or training goal
• Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident

What type of courses qualify for the RAS Foundation Rural Scholarship?
There is no limit on the types of courses that qualify or the age of the applicant. You could be studying anything from physiotherapy, engineering, teaching, agricultural science, horticulture, medicine and commerce - and almost everything in between.

You could be studying at University, TAFE or VET courses, on campus or by distance learning. However applicants all have one thing in common - a desire to play an active part in the future of rural NSW.

What scholarships are available?
Scholarships of up to $6,000 for full-time study or $3,000 for part-time study are available.

Rhodes Scholarships provide opportunities for outstanding all-round students to study at the University of Oxford.

Scholars are selected on the basis of their exceptional intellect, character, leadership and commitment to service. A Rhodes Scholarship supports you in full-time study at the University of Oxford. You can choose from a wide variety of courses.

Each year, there are nine Scholarships available for Australia.

The first Australian Rhodes Scholars took up residence in Oxford in 1904, and since that time many hundreds of Australians have been awarded the Scholarship.

Of the nine scholarships available each year in Australia, each state offers one Scholarship that is awarded by a selection committee of seven members (including three Rhodes Scholars) based in the state. In addition, there are three Australia-at-Large Scholarships awarded by a selection committee based in Canberra. The Rural and Regional Enterprise Scholarships (RRES) program was announced in 2016 to help Australians in regional and remote areas to access higher education. It supports people studying from Certificate IV through to PhD level.

Over 4,000 students have received scholarship funding since the program’s first round which commenced in 2018.

Scholarships support flexible study arrangements, and are available to eligible students:

• commencing a new course of study in 2022
• studying on campus, online or via distance education
• studying from six months full-time up to eight years part-time
  

Eligible students may receive up to $18,000 each (e.g. for a full-time, four-year qualification). Shorter, part-time qualifications are paid on a pro rata basis. An extra $500 is also available to support an internship. The Rural and Regional Enterprise Scholarships Program (RRESP) has been introduced to improve access to and completion of tertiary education courses for students from regional and remote areas in Australia.

The Tertiary Access Payment (TAP) is a one off payment of up to $5,000. It’s to help eligible students with the cost of moving to study. This is for study after you’ve finished year 12 or equivalent.

To get the payment you need to meet some rules. These include:

• moving from a regional or remote area for tertiary study
• starting tertiary study in the year after finishing year 12 or equivalent.

Regional areas are places that aren’t in or near a major city. You can check if your family home is in a regional or remote area using the Student Regional Area Search.

You can claim this payment in your first year of tertiary study only.

The Toowoomba Scholarship Program (TSP) was established to give a ‘hand up’ to disadvantaged Toowoomba community members to achieve their education and employment dreams.

Established in 2019, TSP commenced as a pilot program and funding has been extended until the end of 2023.

What can the money be used for?

• Course fees if not eligible to receive a government subsidy or loan
• Co-contribution fees (for VET courses) where the student is eligible for a subsidy
• Approved education expense such as laptop, internet data, transport, childcare, books and stationery, desk and chair, PPE (personal protective equipment), uniforms.

Career Guidance

The Education Program Coordinator will provide each recipient with the tools and support pre, during and post the Scholarship to ensure they are equipped with contacts and resources for work, placement and job readiness.

Dedicated Learning Partner

The scholarship recipient will receive one to one personalised mentoring support (up to 1-2 hours per fortnight) with a trained Learning Partner. Attending these sessions is a requirement of the award.

Shared Community

The Education Program Coordinator will coordinate peer support and shared learning opportunities (on-line and face to face) for Scholarship recipients to exchange and participate in. 

Am I eligible to apply?

To be eligible applicants must:

• Be a resident of the Toowoomba Regional Council area or relocating to the region for study
• Be planning to start study in an approved course within four months of the award date or already be studying in an approved training or university course
• Commit to attend mentoring and peer support sessions for the duration of the scholarship (up to 12 months)
• Be willing to have their award information published on St Vincent de Paul Society social media, newsletters and reports or other media (with identifying details withheld if required).
  

There are no age restrictions to participate, but the person must be entering post-secondary education or training.

• The Scholarship Engineer position completes minor projects as required. This position will rotate through TRC Branches to assist with project exposure, enhancing training and development needs.

The Toowoomba Regional Council is proud to offer the annual William Groom Scholarship to 18 - 24 year olds, who are commencing their second or third year of a full time 老司机视频 degree course or TAFE Queensland South West diploma next year. The scholarship provides $5000 to the successful applicant, payable in half-yearly instalments. 

The scholarship was established in 2004 to mark the centenary of Toowoomba’s declaration as a city. It honours the many achievements of the municipality’s first mayor William Henry Groom, who served several terms from 1861 before winning seats in the Queensland and Commonwealth Parliaments. 

Successful applicants must be able to demonstrate the following:

• Sound academic achievement in all subjects attempted in the first and/or second year of their course.
• A record of community involvement in local organisations that may include sport, arts, cultural and charitable groups.
• Graduation from a local high school, having attended for two years and reside in the Toowoomba Regional Council area.

The John & Beryl Neilsen Winchester Foundation was established as a Public Foundation in 2011 by Mrs Beryl Neilsen.

The main motivation behind its creation is to provide assistance to children and youth living in rural and regional areas with their education. The desire of Mrs Neilsen is to see rural and regional families given the same opportunities as those living in cities re. various levels of education.

Assistance is provided by way of a scholarship to assist with the study costs of the successful recipient. These scholarships are not limited to those studying a tertiary degree, but are also available to assist those studying trades, secondary and primary education.

Being a Registered Public Foundation, tax deductible donations can be received by the foundation who in turn will allocate these funds to those in most need of assistance to continue with their careers.

The Young Carer Bursary Program supports young carers to continue with their education. The program offers 1,000 bursaries of $3,000 each year. 

To be eligible you must be a young carer who is:

• aged 12 - 25 years old for the entire time you're receiving the bursary
• studying at high school level or beyond, up to and including your first undergraduate degree*
• an Australian citizen or permanent resident
• not receiving another scholarship

The National Scholarship Program celebrates the talents and strengths of young people across Australia who show extraordinary promise and would benefit from additional support to reach their full potential.

Every year, over 20 young people from across Australia are awarded a Youth Off The Streets scholarship.

What does a scholarship include?

• Financial support - recipients receive $6000 towards educational or training goals over two years, including course fees and support costs such as equipment, uniforms, textbooks and stationery.
• Staff support - our staff assist scholarship recipients with budgeting expenses, housing, employment, healthcare, counselling and other service referrals.
• Mentoring - each recipient is matched with a trained mentor who provided guidance and support during the school period.
• National scholarship awards ceremony - this event is held in November and formally recognises each recipient's achievements. 

 Who can apply?

• Students aged 16 to 21 inclusive (as at 20 September) with a clear need for financial assistance
• Students studying in Australia for the duration of the two-year scholarship period
• Citizens or permanent residents of Australia or New Zealand (evidence will be required).

Zonta Club of Brisbane North will offer up to 3 grants (valued at $1000 each) this year, to enable women (who would not otherwise have access to scholarships or financial assistance) to develop their professional life or return to the workforce.

The Zonta Foundation for Women awarded the first Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholarships in 1998 to women pursuing degrees in business leading to a business management career. Jane M. Klausman was a member of the Zonta Club of Syracuse, New York, USA, and the 1990-1995 Zonta International Parliamentarian. During her career, Ms. Klausman was a professional secretary, parliamentarian and entrepreneur.   

The program operates at the Zonta club, district/region and international levels. Zonta International offers 37 international scholarships of US5,000. Each district/region may submit one applicant for consideration for an international scholarship. The five largest districts may submit a second applicant for a total of two applicants. 

Since the program's inception, Zonta has awarded 676 scholarships, totaling more than US$1.6 million, to 522 women representing 66 countries

Eligibility

Women of any age, pursuing a business program with major field of specialization in accounting, finance, business management, marketing, operations management, human resources management, international business, or entrepreneurship at an accredited university/college/institute, who demonstrate outstanding potential in the field and are living or studying in a Zonta district/region, are eligible. Online students are also eligible to apply if enrolled at an accredited university/college/institute.

The world economy continues to leverage and build upon the digital revolution, and industry is becoming critically dependent on information technology. Further, these developments are increasingly disrupting society and familiar social processes. Women, however, are still largely underrepresented in decisions as they relate to information technology and how they impact our world now and into the future. To create a world in which men and women have equal opportunities, women need to have an active role in the field of information technology and access to leadership roles such as chief information officers (CIOs) and chief technology officers (CTOs). Zonta International is pleased to support the Zonta International Women in Technology Scholarship to encourage women to pursue education, career opportunities and leadership roles in information technology.
